Think in commute zones, not only neighborhoods

Many expats start with Vesterbro, Norrebro, Osterbro, Frederiksberg or the city center. These areas are popular, but they are also competitive. Expanding to Amager, Copenhagen SV, Valby, Vanlose, Sydhavn and nearby municipalities can create many more options.

Copenhagen's metro, S-train and bicycle infrastructure can make a home outside the central neighborhoods more practical than it looks on a map.

What to prepare before applying

Landlords often receive many messages. Write a short application that states who you are, where you work or study, when you want to move in and how long you expect to stay. Mention if you are ready for a viewing quickly.

If you are relocating for work, your employment contract or relocation letter can help. If you are a student, use your admission letter and explain how rent will be paid.

Compare total cost, not just monthly rent

A Copenhagen apartment can require a high move-in payment. Compare monthly rent, utilities, deposit, prepaid rent and transport costs together. A cheaper apartment far from work may not be cheaper after commuting time and expenses.

Also check whether the apartment is furnished, whether pets are allowed and whether the lease is time-limited.

  • Search several Copenhagen areas at once.
  • React quickly to relevant listings.
  • Open the original source before contacting the landlord.
