How to Avoid Rental Scams in Denmark
Warning signs, safer payment habits and verification steps for expats searching for rental homes in Denmark.

Common warning signs
Be careful if the rent is far below similar homes, the landlord refuses a viewing or video call, or you are pressured to transfer money immediately. Scammers often create urgency and explain why they cannot meet in person.
A listing can also be suspicious if photos look generic, the address does not match the apartment, or the person contacting you cannot explain who owns or manages the property.
Verify before you pay
Ask for a written contract, the landlord or administrator's full name and a clear payment breakdown. Search the address, compare the listing with other sources and check whether the property administrator has an official website.
If you are abroad, ask for a live video viewing where the person can show the building entrance, apartment details and view from the windows. This does not remove all risk, but it makes many fake listings harder to maintain.
- Avoid paying by cash, crypto or untraceable transfer services.
- Do not send passport copies until you trust the process.
- Be skeptical of landlords who cannot answer basic questions about the home.
Use original sources
When a listing appears in a search tool, open the original source before applying. Original listings from property companies and administrators are usually easier to verify than reposted screenshots or social media posts.
If something feels wrong, pause. Losing a listing is better than losing your deposit.

Frequently asked questions
Are rental scams common in Denmark?
Most listings are legitimate, but scams exist, especially in competitive cities and groups aimed at internationals.
Is a video viewing enough?
It helps, but it is not a full guarantee. Combine it with contract checks, payment checks and source verification.
Should I send my passport?
Only when you understand who receives it and why. Avoid sending sensitive documents early in the conversation.
What if the rent seems too good?
Compare similar listings in the same area. A price far below the market is a warning sign.
